Hi Philipp! Sorry for the late review, and thanks so much for your valuable advice on making the track cleaner and more percussive. When I’m close to finishing a track, it often feels like there’s some extra space that needs to be filled, or that it’s missing a bit of groove, which is why I tend to add FX here and there. But you’re 100% right, I need to push myself to use them only when they’re really necessary so the track stays clear and easy to follow :) I think I need a little break from this track now haha, but I’ll definitely let you know if I make a V3 or start working on new projects. I will receive my K2000 at the end of the week and will try to make a new track with it soon. It only has the factory presets on it. I’ve seen on the internet that there is a big nerd community that has upgraded their synths and created tons of new presets available online. They replace the floppy disk drive with an SD or USB one, add orchestral cards, extra RAM, etc. To be honest, I’m not a great sound designer, so it sounds interesting to me in terms of presets, but I’m probably even worse with putting my hands into electronic systems. I’ll take some time to explore the factory presets and all the functionality of the synth before making a decision, I guess. Thanks again for all your feedback, I really appreciate it! :) 2RUF

Thanks for the feedback, Philipp! Super constructive — it really helped me get some perspective. I’m going to rework the arrangement to better frame the intro, the peak time, etc. You’re right as well, I’ll simplify the bass — having two dedicated layers made it a bit too complex on the ear. I also think I can rework the melody and the drums; they might be a bit too simple, or too locked to the beat. The real challenge now will be changing all that without losing the essence of the track — not that easy for me haha. It’ll probably take some time, but I’ll of course keep you posted once I’ve got a new version I’m happy with! PS : Loved the full cheese fashion style !

Since Philipp Lauer (Berghain, Robert Johnson, Beats in Space etc...) is an experienced Multi-instrumentalist for years, he understands Dance Music inside out, and therefore knows how to finish High Quality Music within hours - as if he was just cooking an healthy dish for his evening dinner. Now I recieved my second Feedback from Italo-Techno`s Gentlemen-Dinosaur - and again, he shared his knowledge in a very relaxed, highly empathic and super motivational way. I´m looking forward to future Feedbacks from him - and highly (highly) recommend this to anyone - who loves Post-House-Proto-Disco-Trance, or just high quality music in general.

Hey Johannes! thank you very much for your feedback and don't worry about the countryside setting, it made it all more human, and it felt a bit like an old friend was taking time to help me with my musical struggle :D I am happy to get an overall positive feedback but mostly because you addressed exactly the point for which i was doubting the most: alternative arrangement, lenght and effects use. You were asking yourself which were my references or inspirations. Definetly Chicago House but as well also detroit house and some more conteporary music producer who have a more melodical approach. But at the end it mostly comes from my hardware jams <3 I will definetly send you the final version!

I hadn't listened to the track in a couple of weeks, and I've just listened to it again (on headphones this time) and can hear the opportunities that you've spoken about (the dubby clap delays are not needed for this track), and I'm going to experiment and liven up the stripped back part (or remove it). Also my feedback on your feedback (as requested): thank you for mentioning the things you like about the track first - as you mentioned it can be hard to share things, so I appreciated those comments. And it was useful that you referenced timestamps a few times, that helped me understand exactly what you were talking about. Also, the other artists that you referenced will be useful - I know their names but I haven't listened to them so much, so I'm going to go and see if I can get some inspiration. Johannes gave me 25 minutes worth of notes, which is probably the most detailed feedback i've ever had from anyone in my life :) It's so valuable getting ears on your music from your favourite artists - I almost can't believe the price! Johannes you were 100% correct in your assessment of my musical taste/background just from listening to the track. You even identified your own track 'Lasga's Return' from over 10 years ago which was a direct inspiration - ok, maybe I ripped it off ;) - and the reason why I sent this to you. You specifically mentioned the bass, and it was your bassline that I was trying to emulate! Some of your suggestions I already had a little inkling about, so it's actually reassuring hearing those coming from a pro. Now if only I could find the original project file... I have a few other projects that I'd like your ears on too, so I look forward to submitting those for feedback soon.

Thank you for your thoughtful and motivating feedback. Your comments about structure resonate. I definitely agree that there is room to improve contrast and progression. I will also apply your advice on the EQ. I use Adobe Audition, which has a spectral analyzer that I think is quite similar to Ableton’s. Considering your question regarding purpose, what I would like most is for my tracks to have a good groove and communicate a feeling. But ultimately I am imagining playing for a dancefloor when I record music. I am grateful for your insights, and I very much appreciate your encouraging words about the sound design and rhythm. If I am able to improve the track I will certainly share the result. Thank you for leaving that option open. - Mathew

Really loved the feedback man, direct, and helpful, as it should be. :) I'm actually gonna go back and try implement some of the stuff you mentioned since my mixing engineer hasn't started working on it yet. I talked to my pianist friend about the piano stabs, he also found them a tiny bit off but he said they still work in the track as a whole, so I might leave them as they are, just cause I'm being lazy, but def trying the strings and other arrangement tweaks you mentioned. II would love to send you a v2, perhaps I can request feedback for another track and also throw in a link for the v2 of this one? or does this need another request on its own? ehhe Anyhow, little bird told me you might be coming to Seattle around August, if so, I would LOVE to get a lemonade and talk shop with you!!

It took some time to get back to you, because I am currently starting new projects left and right, however I wanted to let you know I fixed the first "drop". I now realise it was a very abrupt jump and I tried to fix that. I may be prioritising the soundscape to the actual tension-buildup... Is there any way I can send you a mixdown or should I wait until I've worked through it?

Hey Sarah, vielen Dank für deine aufschlussreiche Bewertung! Dein Feedback war unglaublich wertvoll, und wir haben fleißig am Track gearbeitet. Hier sind die Änderungen, die wir vorgenommen haben: Uns ist aufgefallen, dass der Bass nicht ganz mit der Lead-Melodie harmonisch übereinstimmte, also haben wir eine neue Basslinie erstellt, die wirklich gut zum Groove passt und harmonisch mit Lead und Pads zusammenarbeitet. Es hat die Stimmung etwas verändert, aber wir sind zufrieden mit der Änderung. Basierend auf deinem Vorschlag haben wir dem Track etwas zusätzliche Percussion hinzugefügt. Das hat wirklich einen großen Unterschied gemacht, also danke, dass du uns in diese Richtung gewiesen hast. Um die Atmosphäre noch weiter zu verstärken, haben wir einige zusätzliche EFX und Toms hinzugefügt. Es hat dem Ganzen einen schönen Touch verliehen, finden wir. Hey Sarah! Thank you for the feedback. It is amazing ! I can totally understand what you mean and also agree on this. This is really something I can work with. I use fab filter by the way but this track was recently made and sort off finished the demo just before the deadline so didn’t get into mixing that much! Exited to work on this and the arrangement. I gotta check the date. I hope I can work on it in time!!! Hopefully I can get into it a little bit more tomorrow. Hey Sarah. I just saw your video, I really appreciate your advices. There were some details that I did not consider but it was helpful to have someone marking those things that one can´t see after listening to the song for too long. That filter effect is something I wanted to try to create a little more tension, but I will get rid of it haha. I have a friend who has the Fab Filter plug-in so I can work on the mixing details, I´m still learning about music production so I use pretty much just stock plug-ins from my DAW. Hey, Thanks for getting back to us again. We’re happy the feedback is positive. I know what you mean about the high bass sound. We have had trouble automating the specific plug in that we were using. Although we like it we’ll cut our losses with it and find another instrument for that line that is more easily adjustable. Hey Sarah! Thanks so much for your amazing feedback with regards to making a more club suited version of my track - especially rearranging the composition to get that club groove! I introduced a really nice 303 melody which really compliments the stripped down vocals without overpowering the instrumental elements that make up the track! I loved your feedback on trying to capture a moment for people on the dance floor, so I moved my intro vocals into a really nice stripped back drop in the middle of the track and it sounds so great! I've had a go at putting it together today and I can't wait to hear what you think! xx

Hello Sarah, Thank you very much for your answer and comments, believe me that I took note of absolutely everything and of course I will apply it to this song (Trust) which is very special since it is the first, after 7 or 8 months learning to use Ableton. I hope I can apply your tips correctly, I've already started with some adjustments and there's a huge difference and the song feels more dynamic, thank you so much again for listening and for all the tips. EQ - of kick and bass (low frequency) 2. vocal sample - highlight and introduction 3. bassline - cuts and moments of breath 4. variations of instruments . So im going down to work on that now . Benjamin gave me precious advices for the finishing touches on my tracks ! More precisely, he confirm what I tought about the general balance and direction with the mix. He also made a nice suggestion on trying to switch a main drum element. Finally, he brought up the idea of using more of a small vocal sample that he tought was cool.
