Most techno demos don't get rejected because the producer lacks talent. They get rejected because of a handful of recurring, fixable problems that show up again and again, at every level of experience. The good news is that almost none of them require better plugins or a better studio. They're decisions, not gear.
If you're about to send a track to a label, or just about to call it finished, this is the list worth reading first.
In techno, the low end is the track. The kick and the bass occupy the same space at the bottom of the spectrum, and when they aren't deliberately carved apart, they mask each other. The kick loses its punch, the bass loses its weight, and the whole thing feels weak on a club system even though it sounds fine on headphones.
The fix is almost always a combination of sidechain compression, letting the kick duck the bass so the sub has room to breathe on each hit, and EQ separation so each element owns its zone. Decide which element carries the sub weight and which one steps back. If both are fighting for 40 to 60 Hz, neither wins.
Right above the low end, the 100 to 300 Hz region is where tracks go to get muddy. Every element with body, kick, bass, percussion, synth stabs, pads, has energy building up there, and it accumulates silently. After weeks with a track you stop hearing it. A fresh listener hears it in ten seconds.
A high-pass filter on everything that doesn't need low-mid content, and a modest cut in that region on the elements that do, is often the difference between a demo that sounds amateur and one that sounds club-ready. Clarity in techno comes as much from what you remove as what you add.
The opposite problem shows up just as often: a mix that's all sub and all top, with a scooped-out valley in between. Tracks like this sound thin and small on real systems, no matter how loud you push them. The 300 Hz to 4 kHz range carries the body and presence that make a track feel full.
If your mix sounds slightly muffled or slightly hollow, the midrange is usually the culprit. Filling that gap, or deciding deliberately to keep it sparse as an aesthetic choice, should be a conscious decision, not an accident.
Intros go wrong in two opposite directions. Some are too long and too detailed, front-loading complexity before the track has earned it. Others cram melodic and textural elements into the first thirty seconds that belong much later. A techno intro's job is to be mixable and to build anticipation, not to show everything you made up front.
The common fix is to strip the intro back. Give a DJ a clean, straightforward entry, usually just beat and groove, and hold your best material in reserve so the track has somewhere to go. If the most interesting thing happens in the first minute, everything after it deflates.
Reverb is the most over-used effect in demos. Producers reach for it to add space, depth, and emotion, and end up washing the track out, smearing the transients and pushing everything into the same distant plane. The low end gets cloudy and the groove loses its snap.
Use less, and use it deliberately. Build custom reverb tailored per sound rather than drowning everything in one preset, and roll off the high and low frequencies of your reverb returns so they sit back cleanly. For width on hats and top elements, a doubler or subtle stereo treatment often does the job cleaner than reverb. Space should be a choice, not a default.
The natural instinct when a section feels weak is to add another sound. The result is a track where eight things happen at once and none of them are audible. Strong techno usually has fewer elements than beginners expect, each with room to be heard.
The more useful skill is introducing and removing sounds across the arrangement, not continuously stacking them. Before you add anything, ask what could come out instead. A track that breathes hits harder than a track that's full.
Techno is repetitive by design, and it's easy to take that as license to loop eight bars and let it run. But repetition needs micro-variation to stay alive: a filter opening slowly, a percussion element that shifts every few bars, automation moving quietly underneath. Without it, the loop stops being hypnotic and starts being monotonous.
That distinction is the whole game. Hypnotic is the goal. Monotonous is the failure mode. The difference is movement you might not consciously notice but definitely feel.
Many demos are a good loop rather than a finished track. The elements are there and the groove is solid, but the arrangement doesn't take the listener anywhere. Energy needs to build, break, and release, and the peak material should land in the right place rather than being scattered evenly throughout.
Think in terms of tension and payoff across the full length of the track: exposition, a build, a moment of arrival, a breakdown, a return. Move your most energetic material to where it hits hardest, and let the earlier sections set it up. A clear focal point, one element or moment the whole track points toward, is often what separates a track from a loop.
After the kick-and-bass relationship, groove is where tracks live or die, and hi-hats and secondary percussion are a common weak spot. The recurring issues: hi-hat patterns that are too static and miss the off-beat detail that creates drive; percussion sitting too low in the mix and getting buried on club systems; transients that aren't shaped, so the groove feels soft instead of tight.
Small moves fix most of it. A shaker running underneath, a more deliberate hi-hat rhythm, a couple of dB of level on buried percussion, transient shaping and light bus compression to tighten the hits. Often a flat beat just needs its groove elements pushed forward and sharpened, not rebuilt.
Two related last-mile mistakes. The first is treating mixing, saturation, and gain staging as a final polish step instead of building tone in from the start, which leaves you doing a rescue job on a track that never had a cohesive character. Mix into your saturation and set healthy levels early.
The second is mastering to be loud instead of mastering to translate. A demo crushed to commercial loudness usually sacrifices the dynamics and headroom that make techno hit on a real system, and a mix judged only on headphones or a phone falls apart on studio monitors and in a club. Leave headroom, avoid one aggressive limiter in favor of gentler gain reduction in stages, and always reference on proper speakers before you call it done.
Look at the list and a pattern emerges. Almost none of these are about talent or gear. They're about restraint, structure, and hearing your own track the way someone else will, on a system you didn't mix on, without the weeks of context you've built up. That last part is the hard one, and it's exactly why outside feedback is worth so much. You can't un-hear your own track. Someone else can hear it fresh.
