I sent tracks to Stimming because I really love the quality of his productions, and find his music to be exceptionally cool and unique. It’s a high bar to reach, and if I could ever get close, I’d be a happy chap! But what you get with his feedback is, not surprisingly, really honest. To have Stimming’s reactions and aesthetic nuances applied to your ideas is so valuable, even if it sends you back to square one with your productions. It has inspired me to rethink my song, and possibly send a follow up draft.

Yo!! Wow I was in Europe when you sent this and totally missed it. Thanks so much for getting back! Going to follow up with an email. Also, you totally nailed this feedback. You did the same thing with the Sassy track I sent you, but the part you recommended removing was originally later in the song after another chorus, and I had written it separately as a bridge just to get better with my songwriting chops.When I shortened it I added it here instead and it definitely stood out to me too as a sore thumb. This definitely confirms that so I'm going to try something else. I'd love to get a session with you though where we actually go through what you'd recommend with the drums in an example so I have something to go off of. Thanks agani! Best, Sam

Martin Stimming really is a true master of his craft. He does not mince words with his critiques, and you know invariably that his feedback comes from a true foundational and fundamental understanding of his art. To even get a small glimpse through his very honed lense opened my mind to gaping holes I had in my mixing and writing practices. Conversing with the master was an honor that was truly all mine.

Thanks so much Martin! It was great to see you hear this with fresh ears. I completely agree with what you're saying and really appreciate you taking the time to pour through it. Also - that last drop section was originally a whole other section but I had cut the arrangement shorter and it was interesting that you heard the drop section not payoff. Definitely reinforces that I should complete the original arrangement as opposed to trying to make it shorter for dance norms... There's always radio edits for that :) You can expect a lot more coming from me! Thanks again

hey! thanks for taking your time, the mix was pretty bad, i turned the volume of of kick clap and i think it has more punch, also panned some stuf and did some of the arrangement ideas you talked about, i have the new version, hope you think its better. if you think the mix is still missing something please be as detailed as possible since that would help me the most so i can learn and change it. I am really grateful for Martins feedback and thoughts to my song. I really appreciate his taste and his way of making music, this is why his comments to it are resonating with me a lot. The song was actually finished, but I was not 100% happy and totally stuck in my decisions. He showed me his perspective to the song, which opened a lot and made me see the song "fresh". Hi Martin, I trust you are well, I just wanted to start off by saying a massive thank you for the amazing experience. Seeing your reaction to my song was surreal. Your advice was so spot-on and really showed me you spent time with the track. Thank you for reading the “story” and using it in your critique. I understood what you were saying (at least I hope I did!) and your insights were spot on. Sometimes I get, “Den Wald vor lauter Bäumen nicht sehen”, but I will say that I agree with your opinions. (not for me being a fan, but because you were right). After reflecting on all your advice, I went back to the drawing board and applied your creative advice with my interpretation of it. I did take a bit longer than expected, Perfectionism is my biggest strength/weakness. I'd love to get your take on the new version, giving you free rein to share your thoughts like last time. Hoping you'll enjoy the tweaks and changes inspired by your artistic input. Connecting with you creatively has been a special experience for me, one I won't forget. Hello again Stimming! I'm sorry for the lack of information provided... I did make all of those songs, and I poorly mixed them together last minute before I went to work that day! (I too am not a DJ) I had intended to submit them into the contest however I foolishly assumed the contest was free, once I discovered there was a fee it made me want to do more of a mix and I am glad I did because the song with the harsh low end was the only one I wished to send initially... and I was incredibly happy to hear what you had to say about my tracks and couldn't possibly ask for anything more. I'm eager to try and fix the flaw in the second track as well as search deeply for the file of the last. (I was most hesitant to send that one, funny how that works.) Thank you again so so much! I can't express my gratitude properly via the keyboard, however from now until forever I will consider your positive and encouraging words while making music. Hi Martin, thank you very much for your honest and constructive feedback! Your suggestions are very well explained and totally make sense, I've already started to implement them. I already had sidechain compression on many sounds but I have now pushed the effect further to make it more audible. I just need to work more on that bass chorus layer until I'm satisfied with the sound. I'll be very happy to submit an updated version when I'm done. And to answer your question, yes I used a shimmer reverb :-) Thanks for your help, cheers, Sébastien

Martin, Thanks so much for the very specific and honest feedback :) You have convinced me the particular element in questions is indeed "too much". The concept was 3 layers of this element (triple decker!) which change in pitch in opposite directions. I guess we naturally have quite strong reactions to mismatched tones, especially when they change so blatantly. I appreciate that you didn't try to sugarcoat that reaction. The outside perspective is quite helpful since of course I lose "fresh ears" after many playbacks. I removed the layers (now "Single decker") and I'll put this version on rotation for a while to see if it's possible to make peace with it now. Thanks again, Carl.

Hallo Martin, vielen lieben Dank für das ausführliche Feedback! Ich hab das jetzt ein paar Tage sacken lassen, und kann definitiv mit dir übereinstimmen... der "Kern" des Stückes ist nicht so richtig da, und dann bringt natürlich das Gezwirbel drum rum auch nix. Ich denke, dass ist bei vielen meiner Stücke etwas, was ausbaufähig ist. Nächster Schritt ist dann der Transit von Klangstudie zu ergreifendem Musikstück. Wenn ich wieder in Berlin bin, mach ich mich nochmal an den Klavierpart an (ma rischdisch spiele, hier, verstehsde) ;) Das Stück ist Teil von meinem ersten Album - wenn das fertig ist, kann ich's Dir gerne schicken. Bis dahin, viele Grüße aus dem Dschungel - überarbeite hier gerade mein Live Set und hab ein paar Auftritte :)

Haha da hast du recht bin im Mixing noch etwas unkonstant, werds nochmal neu mixen auf Kopfhörer (Sennheiser HD 650 - kenn die aber noch nicht allzu gut) und ua. dran denken die Melodics etwas lauter zu machen. Guter Tipp im Allgemeinen, werd die Bridge bisschen dancefloor-geeigneter gestalten, möcht aber bewusst viel Melodie und Harmonie in meine Tracks einbauen, - bei dem aber vermutlich wirklich too much. Räumlichkeit ist ziemlich limitiert, hab ein 6 m² Homestudio mit den Focal Alpha 65 und bisschen Akustik-Treatment. Witzig, dass du die KH 150 ansprichst, ich hab mir diese Woche die KH120 ii mit DSP und Messmikro bestellt. I have addressed this issue with echio as well. So. In the beginning of the response you say "let's start at the end" and then mention a bass effect that comes and goes and nothing happens after it. There should maybe be an explosion or similar after it. So do you actually mean the end of the track or the beginning of the track? The beginning with the synth bass down glissando and the "plinke"? Hallo Martin, herzlichen Dank für das brauchbare Feedback! Mit Deinen Tipps kann ich viel anfangen, insbesondere der Hinweis bzgl. des Vocals ist besonders wichtig gewesen. Es ist viel wert, eine professionelle Einschätzung von Außen zu bekommen. Ab einem gewissen Punkt in der Produktion wird man dann doch etwas "betriebsblind", wenn man unvorsichtig ist. Ey Martin du kannst dir nicht vorstellen wie sehr mich das freut zu hören, dass du die Nummer so cool findest. Meine Frau und ich hatten uns springend in den Armen als wir das Video gesehen haben. Du hast mir meine Frage auch perfekt beantwortet. Ich wollte nur wissen, ob es irritierend auffällt, aber scheint ja okay zu sein. Deinen Tipp werde ich aber trotzdem noch versuchen einzubringen. Zu deinen Fragen. Klar will ich auf dem Sampler! Vielen Dank für das Angebot vorgeschlagen zu werden. Und ja, ich mach das tatsächlich als Hobby. Bin nicht mit dem größten Selbstbewusstsein gesegnet und finde mein eigenes Zeug meistens nicht gut genug, aber das wird in letzter Zeit immer besser und so eine Wertschätzung von dir gibt natürlich nochmal ein richtigen Push! Ich werde mich jetzt auch mal mehr auf die Sachen konzentrieren die nichts mit Musik machen zu tun haben, damit ich tatsächlich mal aufs nächste Level kommen kann. Damit Geld zu verdienen wäre schon geil muss ich sagen. Vor allem so wie du deine Karriere gestaltest, dass du noch viel Studiozeit hast und deine Familie auch noch irgendwie genug Platz findet, finde ich vorbildlich. Vielen Dank noch mal Martin!!! Dear mr. Stimming, thank you for your feedback. With some intense reflection, I thought of ways to improve not on this particular demo (I did remake the whole track, but it's not as important). What important is changes on the approach to "building" a track. I think I did level up in my arrangement skills driven by your idea regarding the anchors of arrangement and just straight up acknowledgement that it was indeed too many components, I saw a lot of producers reflecting on the same thing and it feels now so simple, yet, so easy to get lost in production and overcomplicate things, forgetting about what's the key. Thank you and I am hoping to make something new using my "new skills" and hopefully get new level of feedback ;-) P.S. this "techno horn", oh boy, it's so poor, I was completely ignoring it's aesthetics: it somehow did the job of sucking in the attention and weighing into the transition, but I hate it so bad, ha-ha.

Martin´s Feedback war wie schon beim letzten Mal super. Da dies allerdings schon der zweite Track ist, den ich ihm "aufgenötigt" habe, gab es leichte Verwirrung, ob dies eine Weiterentwicklung des ersten Tracks oder ein komplett neuer Track war. Deshalb wie schon beim letzten Mal mein Hauptkritikpunkt: direkte Kommunikation ist ein essentielles Feature. Das müßt ihr bitte unbedingt ermöglichen.

this was perfect, very useful and sincere. it’s a joy to hear Stimming critique anything, but even moreso when it’s my work! my only critique of the critique is that the wind “effect” was too loud, making it inaudible at points, but I’m quite happy!

Thanks for the great feedback. Good summary at the end. I believe if possible it would be good to provide a written summary or some notes. It would also be nice with a recording in a studio space with speakers to play the parts mentioned for precision.

thanks For the ambiental sounds you're referring to use them in a granular sampler with effects? will check the reverb on the drums, and for the texture your're referring like the lofi tape machines, something that adds artifacts? Kind Regards Dave

Thanks for the feedback, and for the kind words. I completely agree, sometimes I feel like I’m “hiding” behind the sound design. It’s strange because I play piano and have no problems with harmony there, but I find it tricky to integrate into my music.
