Welcome to Studio Favorites, the series where artists share the essential tools, synths, and gear that shape their sound.

This time, we’re featuring Philipp Lauer — a producer, remixer, DJ, and half of multiple beloved projects like Tuff City Kids, Black Spuma, and TNP. With solo releases on Running Back, Permanent Vacation, Beats In Space, LARJ, and Future Boogie, plus remixes for everyone from Sven Väth to Pet Shop Boys, Lauer is one of house music’s most consistent and creative forces.

Here are the studio essentials that keep his workflow inspired.

Kurzweil K2000R

“A very diverse and powerful sounding synth that’s been with me pretty much from the start!”

A true workhorse, the Kurzweil K2000R is a rack-mounted sampler-synth powerhouse that has followed Lauer from his earliest productions to now.

Realistic Electronic Reverb

“The name is a total lie. It has two inputs / outputs and can self-oscillate… as gritty as it gets.”

Far from polished, this old-school Realistic unit is beloved by Lauer for its character, grit, and unpredictable textures — a perfect example of finding charm in imperfect gear.

Crumar DS-2

“Cult instrument. I got it cheap almost 20 years ago and never really used it until recently. Current fave!”

The Crumar DS-2 is a vintage Italian synth from the late ’70s, known for its lush, raw analog tone. For Lauer, it’s a rediscovered gem now shaping his latest productions.

His Computer

“This most reliable buddy has been with me for a while now: thank you for your service… and take me to paradise!”

Sometimes the most important piece of gear is the one we take for granted. For Lauer, his computer is the faithful backbone of everything else — the bridge between vintage hardware and the modern studio.

Lauer

Philipp Lauer has had his fingers in quite a few pies over the last 2 decades or so, following the release of his debut 12” in 2000. As CEO of the infamous Pyramide II studio his remix count goes way beyond 200 (still ceaselessly rising), including work for Sven Väth, Pet Shop Boys, M83, S-Express, Falco or Tears For Fears to name just a few. Besides releasing solo productions as Lauer on labels such as Running Back, Permanent Vacation, Beats In Space, LARJ, Future Boogie. It is also due to his diligent work as a teamplayer that makes him appear as one of the hardest working people in the business: Tuff City Kids (with Gerd Janson), Black Spuma (with Fabrizio Mammarella) and TNP (with Tim Sweeney) are amongst those projects Lauer is involved in. Although Philipp’s Discogs page already has the size of a phone book and his tour schedule reads like Odyssey, he’s only just warming up for whatever is gonna happen.
