5 Music Production Tips from Fur Coat

I’ve been making music since 2004, and one thing I’ve learned is that your workflow should never stop evolving. I’m still constantly changing the way I work while trying to keep the elements that make the Fur Coat sound recognizable.

Make The Loop Impossible To Ignore:

I always start with the groove and a main hook.

If the groove feels right and the hook makes sense on its own,

I keep looping it until I know I’m not getting tired of it.

If it still feels good after hearing it over and over,

that’s usually a very good sign that I have something.

I Mix While I Produce:

Everyone tells you not to mix while you’re producing,

but I’ve always worked differently.

I try to make every element sound as close as possible

to how I want it in the final mix from the moment I create it.

If the sound isn’t right from the beginning,

I don’t believe the final mix will magically fix it.

Plugins Won’t Fix A Bad Sound:

The source is always more important than the processing.

You don’t need to put an effect on every sound just because you can.

If a VST or hardware preset sounds great and works in the track,

I’m happy to use it exactly as it is.

Sometimes the best production decision is doing nothing.

Don’t Wait For Your Best Track:
Making music is a daily practice, not a one-day inspiration.

You can’t expect your best track to come out every time you open the studio.

The more you work, experiment and try different approaches,

the more you develop your instincts.

After more than 20 years, my workflow is still changing.

You Don’t Have To Do It Alone:

You don’t have to be great at every part of producing.

Know your strengths, recognize your weaknesses and let other people contribute.

Every time I collaborate with another artist, I discover a different

approach to making music. There’s never only one right way to produce a track.
